Reviews of Blues Head "A
rhythmically tight cross section of modern electric blues, Southern acoustic
material and funk-inflected R&B numbers... The band is superb... Pierson
demonstrates serious vocal talent; his aptitude for phrasing and tone
belie his young age... Juber's contributions are substantial (with) great
dynamics and passionately articulated guitar passages... Steve Pierson
is a name you'll hear more of in the future."
"Blues
Head reveals Pierson as a songwriter able to weave blues elements
into rock tunes and folky ballads as well as tackle the genre head-on.
Pierson might be a slide guitar pro, as evidenced by Blues Head's
standout track, the haunting "Cold in My Bed," but "Bad
Condition" finds the player in fine funk-blues form."
"Steve
Pierson and Blues Head stole the afternoon installment of the 6th Annual
Bluesapalooza in Mamoth Lakes, CA this past weekend. Their hour long set
was pure fun and their brand of rockin' guitar driven blues had the crowd
on their feet and dancing in the sawdust. The exchange of guitar licks
between Laurence Juber and Steve Pierson was something to behold, and
Pierson's good looks, commanding voice, and charismatic stage presence
will take him far!"
"Pierson,
who has the slick look of a Chris Isaaks, plays the slide guitar like
an old pro and sings with a bright, sweet gruffness. Blues Head blends
traditional blues sounds with rock. "Cold in My Bed" unwinds
slowly into a twangy Delta slide guitar ballad. "Bad Condition"
spices things up with "Voodoo Chile" type licks courtesy of
fingerstylist Juber."
"Pierson
has got a flair for the dramatic in both his music and his presentation.
He debuts with an impressive set of songs and a powerful band... He could
be a major player."
"Pierson
proves with soulful guitar playing and gritty vocals that he deserves
to lead the veterans of rock that back him up."
"...One
of the hottest up-and-coming blues acts today."
"Outstanding...
Standard blues reinvented, featuring tales of love, loneliness, and deception
- all the things we love to be miserable about - but told with a bit of
blues humor thrown in. Incredible band. Pierson makes the slide guitar
sing with bittersweetness."
"Pierson
plays a mean electric guitar and soulful slide guitar, too... Pierson
shows promise with this collection of exciting songs, well-executed vocals,
and a superior band."
"Steve
Pierson is a natural for the blues. Blues Head is well worth a second
and third listen!"
"Steve
Pierson delivers a solid performance with his debut CD, Blues Head...
I am now a confirmed "blues head" myself, and could listen to
this CD every day."
"...He
really shines on things like "Cold in My Bed," a slow, Delta-influenced
piece, playing some sweet and lowdown slide on his National Resophonic
electric. The band sways behind him like a Southern breeze through the
sycamores and the feeling that comes across reminds one of juke joints
and backporch parties in the heat of the summer. His voice is especially
convincing on this cut, while his slide work has the roots of Son House
and other Delta slide masters. (Pierson) certainly is a force to be reckoned
with... with great talent for writing some memorable songs, playing some
swell guitar and singing from the heart."
"Entering
the world of electric blues is California based guitarist and singer Steve
Pierson. Assembling a crack team of backing musicians, Pierson released
his debut CD, Blues Head, featuring well-crafted, smoldering blues
tracks topped with plenty of soulful guitar playing. Pierson seems
especially adept at the slow blues numbers such as "Secrets"
and "Found Somebody to Love", but can also rip on the uptempo
numbers, such as the wah-wah inflicted "Bad Condition". "I
Chose To Sing the Blues" features a great example of a clean, yet
bone-cutting solo. Pierson clearly has all the requisite blues tones
at his fingertips (even acoustic, check out the slide work on "Melinda's
Eyes" and "Cold in My Bed"). However, it takes years
to develop the touch to use those tones skillfully - Pierson has the experience,
the chops, and the edge to pull it off."
"Steve
Pierson recently put out a new album called "Blues Head". I
guess that would be the same as a self-titled release for Steve...! He
is definitely a Blues-Head! Searing guitars, soulful acoustic slides.
The album includes Grammy winner, Laurence Juber on guitar as well.
On this album Steve is also backed by Steve Miller bassist, Gerald
Johnson, keyboardist Michael Murphy, and Taj Mahal drummer, Tony Braunagel!
All that on a debut album?? I guess Steve would be off to
a great start. 'Blues Head' is a disc worth it's weight in gold."
"His
debut recording, Blues Head, demonstrates that even at a relatively
young age, he has learned to "do it right the first time". Pierson
is a gifted guitarist/singer/songwriter who had the wisdom from the begining
to assemble a world class cast of characters for his opening act. Whether
rocking electric blues or acoustic slide, the guitar playing on this CD
ranges from splendid to spectacular."
"Do
not let him into your kitchen! That boy is good!" |
